I've been quite lucky over the past few weeks to witness a number of amazing and inspiring shows. First there was Chonique & Lisette's BRILLIANT piece at Carnival...

not the whole piece, but definitely my favorite part

Then, I saw J*Davey twice in one week...

Once at Gibson Showroom in Beverly Hills

and once at The Roxy. I've been unable to find a video of that performance, but they perform this song ("Get Together"), and my heart melts every time.

I also saw Rhapsody James' Siren Assassins, which I covered HERE.

This week, I see Janelle Monae.

Wednesday. 8PM. The Viper Room. West Hollywood, CA

I previously saw her in New York a while back, before the release of Metropolis. Amazing shows, both times. This time, I'm anxious to see her perform "Tightrope" and "Cold War" from her upcoming CD, The ArchAndroid

On Friday, The Pan African Film & Arts Festival is debuting a new documentary that looks at the brief history of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Black Panther Party. “41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers” is the first of a planned series on the rise and fall of the Party's L.A chapter.

According to one of the film's producers, writer and activist Jasmyne Cannick:

“41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers” contains interviews with former Black Panther Party members along with archival footage detailing the history of racism in Los Angeles, including the Watt’s Uprising from the perspective of the participants who “engaged with the L.A.P.D."
It's about time a documentary explored the Los Angeles chapter's history. In my reading, I've always read of the heightened violence and radical tactics employed by this chapter. To achieve the type of change they sought, there was clearly no other alternative. Peaceful demonstration fixed nothing, they felt, so they took things a step further. While the chapter ultimately crumbled, I applaud their courage.

If necessary, I am completely fine with going alone. This is something I must see. Check out the trailer:

"41st & Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers" airs four times a day for one week, from March 26 - April 1 at the Culver Plaza Theaters in Los Angeles (9919 Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA). Check the PAFF website for showtimes: HERE.

If I were close to LA, I would sooooo go see that documentary with you. I'm currently reading Elaine Brown's "A Taste of Power" for my bookclub meeting on sunday. It has ALOT about the LA chapter of the BP, since she was right smack dab in the middle of it. Very interesting. I am in love with this book at the moment
